    Information for New Registrants

In order to obtain a nuchal translucency ID number to submit NT measurements for first trimester screening in Ontario, please complete the following steps:

Step 1: Obtain a Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) nuchal translucency certificate and an FMF ID number. Complete the specific training provided by the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF UK) at This requires both completion of the theoretical component (first trimester screening online course) and submission of three satisfactory NT images to the FMF. Once you have obtained an FMF certificate and ID number, proceed to step 2.

Step 2: Register with Prenatal Screening Ontario at BORN Ontario. Click here and select “New Sonographer”. Complete the registration form, including your contact information. An email will be sent to you with a form to complete the next step (see step 3). (Note: when selecting an Ontario laboratory to register with, please select the laboratory you expect your place of employment will send NT measurements to. If you change places of employment or submit to a different lab, you do not need to register again with another laboratory, your registration will apply to all labs).

Step 3: Submit a total of 15 NT and CRL measurements acquired over the CRL range provided on the application form. After registering, you will receive an email with an application form requiring 15 NT/CRL measurements. These measurements must be obtained by the applicant. (Note: the measurements obtained by the applicant cannot be submitted for NT screening, as the applicant sonographer has not yet been approved for NT number submission. Any NT’s submitted on a first trimester screening requisition must be obtained by an NT-registered sonographer). When the application form is complete, please fax to the lab you selected during registration (contact information provided on the form). The 15 data points will be assessed by the lab.

Step 4: Results. Please allow up to two weeks for processing of submitted data points. If the 15 data points generate an acceptable curve, the lab will provide you with an Ontario NT ID number (usually the same as your FMF ID number), as well as a BORN login so that you may access and monitor your own performance curve for NTQA in the future. You will also be added to the roster of NT registered sonographers for all prenatal screening labs in Ontario. If the 15 data points do not generate an acceptable curve, the lab will contact you requesting further data points or providing further direction.
