By leveraging data and technology, BORN Ontario works behind the scenes to help perinatal health-care providers and organizations provide quality care for Ontario families.

Monitoring Outcomes of Fertility Treatment

BORN helps fertility clinics in Canada collect, analyze and report their data. Fertility specialists use this data to monitor the outcomes of children born through assisted reproductive technology (ART) and to identify important trends (i.e. multiple pregnancy rate, gestational surrogacy, fertility preservations for non-medical reasons, etc.).

Helping Sonographers

BORN works with sonographers (specialists in the use of ultrasound) to ensure they obtain consistent, accurate ultrasound measurements (i.e. nuchal translucency) for pregnant individuals. These measurements are important as they are used to help calculate the risk of a chromosomal abnormality (e.g., Down syndrome, Trisomy 18).

Monitoring and Evaluating Quality Care

BORN helps health-providers such as doctors, nurses and midwives track how they are performing in caring for pregnant individuals and their newborns. Through a tool called the Maternal Newborn Dashboard, BORN provides a visual performance gauge that also allows comparison and provincial benchmarks (established standards).

Finding Babies who Missed Important Tests

Newborn screening is a test done shortly after birth to look for potentially life threatening, but treatable, diseases that usually show no symptoms in the newborn period. Every baby is at risk and every baby should be screened. Each day BORN provides Newborn Screening Ontario with information on babies who may have missed their screen (for a variety of reasons). This allows health-care providers to ensure that babies who have missed a screen get the care they need to avoid potentially life-long health issues.

Providing Prenatal Screening Resources

BORN is home to Prenatal Screening Ontario (PSO). PSO provides resources to patients and health-care providers such as doctors, nurses, and midwives. For example, PSO gives providers current test requisitions (orders for specific laboratory tests or services) and how-to guides (e.g. How to Offer Prenatal Screening; How to Discuss Results etc.)
